City consolidates fire code review offices

Architects, engineers and developers seeking fire alarm inspections and fire code plan reviews in Providence can now obtain approvals by visiting one office instead of two.

Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline said the functions of the city’s fire alarm and fire code plan reviewers have been merged into one office – the Providence Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Bureau, which will be located in the Public Safety Complex on Washington Street.

Cicilline said the move could make the city more attractive to potential developers.

“When I met with developers and asked them what challenges they face doing business in Providence, they told me that for years the permitting process has been a long-standing problem,” he said, adding the consolidation of offices should ensure plans are approved in a timely manner.
