Officials from Nixon Peabody, which has a Providence office, confirmed they have begun talks about a possible merge with the Boston-based law firm of Hutchins, Wheeler & Dittmar, but emphasized the conversation is just beginning.
Calling the talks “preliminary,” Bill Albert, a spokesperson from Nixon Peabody’s Rochester, N.Y. office said his law firm, which currently has 13 offices and more than 500 attorneys, often explores merger possibilities.

“We are approached regularly by groups and firms looking to merge,” he said. “Hutchins, Wheeler & Dittmar is a very fine firm, but a lot has to be done before (our firms would merge). What we are involved in now is preliminary talks.”
Nixon Peabody, the larger of the two firms was established in 1999 with the merger of two smaller firms: Peabody and Brown, a Boston firm, and Nixon Hargrave, Devans & Doyle based in Rochester, N.Y. Hutchins, Wheeler & Dittmar is a general practice firm with 110 lawyers.
