An anonymous donor has given $1 million to New Bedford, Mass.-based Southcoast Hospitals Group to support vital clinical initiatives, such as open heart surgery, emergency room expansion and inpatient beds.
“This generous donation is critical to the continued growth of Southcoast Hospitals Group as we strive to expand the breadth of complex and life-saving medical procedures that meet the health needs of our communities,” said Ronald B. Goodspeed, MD, MPH, president of Southcoast Hospitals Group.
The unrestricted gift is believed to be one of the largest anonymous donations given to a hospital group in Massachusetts.

While Southcoast’s Board of Trustees have not yet determined where the money will be spent, Dr. Goodspeed said Southcoast is undertaking initiatives to add more acute care inpatient beds, increase surgical services, expand emergency departments to meet a growing need and continue to provide patients with the most advanced technology available. He said these initiatives would unfold over the next three to five years.
