If the pride of Pawtucket be the Blackstone River Valley, it is because the 8.8 square miles that make up the city were formed from portions of both sides of the river. The portion east of the river, which was taken from Seekonk, was incorporated into Massachusetts as the Town of Pawtucket in 1828. In 1862 it was transferred to Rhode Island as a town. The portion west of the river was taken from North Providence and annexed to Pawtucket in 1874. Eleven years later, Pawtucket was incorporated as a city, and shortly thereafter the city government was organized. In addition to being known for the river, Pawtucket is known as the home of Samuel Slater, who in 1790 built the Arkwright models for cotton machinery that established the industry in America. His factory was the first successful cotton mill in the country operated by water power. The Old Slater Mill, now restored, has been converted into a museum.
In more recent history, Pawtucket gained worldwide recognition for McCoy Stadium, the home of the Pawtucket Red Sox; the AAA affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. Around 7:30 p.m. on April 18, 1981, the Paw Sox began a game against the Rochester Red Wings which was still tied 2-2 at 4:09 the next morning after 32 innings. The game resumed nearly two months later, and the Sox defeated the visiting team by one run in what is still the longest game in professional baseball history.
