AIA honors two architects

WASHINGTON – The American Institute of Architects last week bestowed national awards on two local young architects.
Kristine Royal, an architect at Newport Collaborative Architects, and Anthony Piermarini, a part-time instructor at the Rhode Island School of Design, both received Young Architects Awards. The AIA handed out nine awards nationwide to architects with less than 10 years in the field. Recipients must have shown exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the profession early in their careers.
Royal specializes in historic preservation, adaptive reuse and sustainable projects, and recently completed the construction administration of the Aquidneck Mill restoration and adaptive reuse at the International Yacht Restoration School complex in Newport. The AIA jury commended Royal for her active role within the Young Architects Forum – she once chaired the forum – and her focus on restoration architecture.
“NCA is honored to have a uniquely qualified and dedicated individual such as Kristine,” said John K. Grosvenor, a principal at NCA. “We are gratified at her commitment to professional development.”
Besides teaching an architectural class at RISD, Piermarini is an architect at Boston-based Studio Luz Architects. Piermarini, who received his architect’s license in 2005, said he was honored to win the award.
