Almond signs dredging disposal bill

PROVIDENCE — Governor Lincoln Almond has signed the so-called Marine Waterways
and Boating Facilities Act of 2001, the House bill that creates a framework for
dredging and the re-use and disposal; of dredging spoil. The law authorizes the
Coastal Resources management Council as the principal agency to establish a coherent
plan for dredging and dredge material management. The U.S Corps of Engineers recently
released its proposal for dredging the Providence River channel and disposing
of the dredged material. In signing the bill into law, Governor Almond praised
all parties involved in producing the bill, including the General Assembly, the
Department of Environmental management, the Economic Development Corporation,
Coastal Resource Management Council and the various environmental groups and marine
trades organizations.
