Almond vetoes several measures

PROVIDENCE — Governor Almond, objecting to several legislative ventures vetoed
a proposed tax free zone for West Warwick, pension obligation bills for Cranston
and Woonsocket, and sovereign immunity waiver legislation.

Asserting that the legislation that would permit West Warwick to set up a state tax-free zone within its borders would set a bad precedent and eliminate uniform tax enforcement throughout the state, Almond vetoed the legislation.

In vetoing the bills authorizing the issuance of pension obligation bonds by Cranston and Woonsocket, Almond asserted that the state had no experience in executing a state or municipal pension obligation bond.

Almond also vetoed three other bills, one related to the waiver of the state’s sovereign immunity, another regarding a sunset provision of a law related to notification of aliens concerning the potential immigration law consequences of their no contest pleas, and the third that would have reduced the time frame for discharge of a lien from 20 years to six.
