Budget office reports revenue increases

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Island’s general revenue collections totaled $763.2 million for the first five months of fiscal 2001, according to the state budget office. This number represents a 5.2 percent increase over collections for the same period a year ago, and reflects the full value of the state’s sales tax. Last year, a portion of the sales tax was dedicated to DEPCO debt repayment, and was therefore not included in general revenue tax collections.

Receipts from various state departments are 43.9 percent less than collections for the same period a year ago, the budget office said. However, it noted that certain major deadlines for departmental revenue collections, such as the hospital licensing fee, are due later in the current fiscal year than they were during last year. Adjusting for the timing difference, departmental receipts are actually 10.4 percent greater than they were during the same period a year ago, the office said.
