Kathleen Bartels has been named a partner, and her name has been added to the company title at Lerner Ladds + Bartels, Inc. Bartels has been with the company, which was previously known as Lerner/Ladds, since 1996. She was made associate of the firm in 1998. She is a graduate of Coventry High School, Dartmouth College, and the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.

Merritt Crowley
Merritt Crowley of North Scituate has been named campaign director at Bryant College. She will be responsible for planning, managing, implementing and evaluating all campaign activities for the college. She joined Bryant in 1997, as major and planned giving officer. Prior to that she ws employed at Connecticut College, Brown University, and Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center in Boston. Crowley holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Tufts University.
Marylou Buyse, MD, MS

Marylou Buyse, MD, MS, vice president of health affairs for United-Health-care of New England has been named honorary chairperson of the Rhode Island Chapter of the March of Dimes Folic Acid Council. When taken before and during the first weeks of pregnancy, folic acid, a B vitamin, has proven to be effective in reducing the incidence of neural tube defects–certain brain and spinal birth disorders, including spina bifida. These defects occur early in pregnancy, before most women are aware they are pregnant. Dr. Buyse is a practicing physician, administrator and the immediate past president of the Massachusetts Medical Society.
Rabin Chandran, MD
Rabin Chandran, MD has been appointed to the staff of physicians in the department of family medicine at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island. Dr. Chandran, a resident of North Attleboro, received his medical degree from the University of Washington/Seattle and his undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts/Amherst. A clinical assistant professor of family medicine at Brown University School of Medicine, Chandran is board certified in family medicine. Dr. Chandran served his residency at Memorial Hospital from 1996 through 1999. Most recently he was named Memorial’s assistant residency director of family medicine.

Sandra G. Parillo was elected senior vice president of the Providence Mutual Fire Insurance Company at a recent meeting of the board of directors. Currently corporate secretary of the company, Parillo now will be responsible for the marketing and underwriting functions of Providence Mutual. She joined the company in 1977, and is a graduate of Rhode Island College and the University of Rhode Island.

Donald H. Dolphin
Donald H. Dolphin has joined O’Connell Investment Services, Inc. of Providence as a senior vice president. A chartered financial analyst, he has been named director of research of the firm and will also assist in portfolio management. He was previously a senior vice president of investments and chairman of the investment committee of Citizens Bank. Dolphin is an active member and past president of the Providence Society of Financial Analysts. He is a graduate of Clark University with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He and his wife, Elaine live in Lincoln.

Peter Lawson Kennedy
Peter Lawson Kennedy, a founding partner of Adler Pollock & Sheehan was recently elected a fellow of the American College of Construction Lawyers. He will be formally inducted into the 115-member organization at its annual meeting next month. Kennedy has practiced in the area of construction for more than 35 years. Most notably he successfully defended the Port of Providence against a $6 million claim from an international construction firm in a contract dispute. He is a graduate of Harvard and Columbia University Law School.

Thomas J. Cavanagh
Thomas J. Cavanagh has been elected chairman of The National Paperbox Association, a trade organization for independent carton and boxmakers, located in Virginia. Formerly a treasurer and vice chairman for the NPA, he is the president of the F.H. Buffinton Company of Pawtucket. Cavanagh is a Seekonk resident, and a graduate of Fairfield University and Providence College.

Liana Maria Cassar has been hired to oversee the operations of HELP Lead Safe Center. A one-stop resource for lead poisoned children and their families, the Center is financed by the city’s not-for-profit hospitals and colleges. Cassar will oversee managers and housing specialists as they work in the community to help families who are coping with childhood lead poisoning, find and utilize an array of treatment, education and housing services. She will also be responsible for the maintenance of the Center’s childhood lead poisoning database. Cassar has served as a director at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, and as a minority program coordinator at Harvard Medical School Center of Excellence in Women’s Health. She has a master’s degree in public health and international health from Boston University.
Ronald A. Grandchamp
TRAVEL
Ronald A. Grandchamp, co-owner of Middletown Cruise and Travel has been re-appointed for two years to represent Newport County on the eight-member Rhode Island Travel Commission. He was appointed a year ago for a one-year term by Governor Almond, who reappointed him. Grandchamp is also a member of the board of directors of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce, and past president of the Middletown Rotary Club.
