Cambridge Health agrees to buy Everett hospital

EVERETT — Cambridge Health Alliance announced that it had reached agreement to
buy Whidden Memorial Hospital in Everett. Cambridge Health Alliance is the state’s
only remaining public hospital network. Whidden has planned to close, the Boston
Globe reported. Cambridge Health also planned to transfer eventually its 42 bed
psychiatric unit from Malden Medical Center (which also had been expected to close)
to Whidden. Cambridge Health owns hospitals in Cambridge and Somerville.
