Governor Donald L. Carcieri said the state is seeking a disaster
declaration from U.S. President George W. Bush in the aftermath of
a nightclub fire that killed 97 people.
If Bush grants the request, Rhode Island would be eligible
for federal programs to fund the investigation and identification
of bodies and assist victims of the fire in West Warwick.

Carcieri said Bush called him yesterday morning. The president
“expressed great sympathy’” and “assured me that they’re going
to try to do what they can to help us,” Carcieri said in a
televised news conference.
The Station club, located about 15 miles southwest of
Providence, burned to the ground Thursday after sparks from
pyrotechnic machines set fire to soundproofing material lining the
wall and ceiling. About 300 people were in the club at the time.
The fire began during a concert by Great White, a 1980s metal band.”
