NEWPORT – The Community College of Rhode Island broke ground Oct. 28 on a new $12.4 million Newport County campus.
The 65,000-square-foot building, designed by Newport Collaborative Architects, will feature a student-services complex, an auditorium and a wing of classrooms and laboratories. It is scheduled to open in spring 2005, according to a CCRI announcement.
CCRI says the new campus will be the culmination of a plan set by the Rhode Island Legislature 40 years ago to create a four-site community college network. The three existing CCRI locations are in Warwick, Providence and Lincoln.

State’s unemployment falls sharply
PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in September dropped nearly 1 percent from August to 4.5 percent, remaining well below the national rate of 6.1 percent, according to the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training.
The number of people with jobs rose 2,000, while the number of unemployed residents fell by 4,500, the labor department reported. The unemployment rate is lower than a year ago, when it stood at 5.3 percent.
Over the year, employment was up 800 jobs from the 483,800 jobs reported in September 2002. Increases in retail trade, health care and social assistance and construction jobs overshadowed steep declines in manufacturing, educational services, administrative and waste services and accommodation and food services jobs.
