Providence Head Start employees earn certificate from CCRI

Twelve social service employees of Providence Head Start recently earned a Family Services Worker Certificate from the Community College of Rhode Island. The 18-credit certificate was customized and included six classes in human services, including Parent & Child Relations and Child Growth & Development. The courses were chosen to build the skills of people who interact with young children and their caregivers on a daily basis.

CCRI and Head Start scheduled classes at the end of the workday and on a part-time basis to help the enrolled employees balance their work and educational requirements. Many of the graduates took two to three years to complete the certificate program. All credits earned through the program are transferable toward an associate degree at CCRI, the college said in a release.

With 10 centers in the Providence area, Providence Head Start serves more than 1,000 economically disadvantaged families from Greater Providence and Blackstone Valley, offering educational opportunities in the areas of health, nutrition, parent involvement, literacy and math skills.
