PROVIDENCE — Gov. Lincoln Almond, representatives from the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) and representatives from Rhode Island College (RIC) today signed an agreement establishing the state’s Child Welfare Institute at the college.
According to a statement released by the governor’s office, the institute is to be jointly administered by DCYF and RIC’s School of Social Work. Established upon the recommendation of the governor’s Commission to Study Foster and Adoptive Care, and Jay Lindgren, director of DCYF, the institute will provide classroom and on-the-job training from child welfare and youth corrections professionals.

Bruce Rollins, chief of training at DCYF, will lead the institute on a temporary basis until a permanent director is found, the governor’s office said. The institute will be eligible to receive federal Child Welfare Training Funding, which will be leveraged to pay a percentage of salaries for the institute’s staff. The funding also allows RIC to hire a new faculty member for every five new students in the program, the governor’s office said.
