Cianci will not seek re-election

Mayor Vincent A. Cianci Jr. said today that he is not seeking re-election. The announcement came two days after being convicted on a racketeering charge.

Cianci, the longest-standing mayor in the country, said it wouldn’t be fair to the city’s residents to run for office because of the legal uncertainty he faces with the conviction.

He made the announcement three hours prior to the 4 p.m. deadline to file election papers for office.

Cianci, who was a key player in the revitalization of Providence, particularly in the downtown area, said he hopes to serve out his term, which ends in January.

“The city is my life,” Cianci told reporters during a press conference in his office. “It’s been a great ride.”

Asked by reporters about the black mark left on his administration with his conviction and the conviction of city employees, Cianci maintained his innocence and said he did not know of corruption from within City Hall.
