Citizens and WJAR award $25K grant to local nonprofit

Citizens Bank Rhode Island and WJAR-TV NBC10 recently named The Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence as the 2007 fourth quarter Champion in Action in the violence prevention category. As part of the award, the nonprofit will receive a $25,000 grant, media coverage and extensive promotional and volunteer support for its work.
The Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence is being recognized for its part in helping to lower violent crimes in Providence, which have dropped by 50 percent. In a news release, WJAR and Citizens noted the institute’s work to reduce youth violence, which has include mentor programs for inner-city teenagers during the summer, partnering with more than 35 employers to provide jobs and training for nearly 200 high school students, and successfully training 2,500 children to pursue nonviolence practices. •
