Mayor Vincent A. Cianci, Jr. has announced that the City of
Providence will host a public meeting at 7:00 p.m. on January 7 at DARE,
located at 340 Lockwood St. in Providence, to discuss the environmental
studies that will be conducted to evaluate the needs of the Narragansett
Landing area of the New Cities project.
The City is administration a $250,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency that is supporting the study and the hiring of a
consultant to perform the assessment of this specific development
area.

“In June of 2000, the City of Providence, in partnership with a team of
world renowned consultants, announced the redevelopment plans for the
three ‘New Cities,’ long underused and neglected areas of the city,”
Cianci said. “These plans involve the rehabilitation of hundreds of
acres of vacant and contaminated industrial land and miles of currently
inaccessible waterfront property.”

Geo-environmental, Inc. will be testing environmental samples from the
Narragansett Landing area — which encompasses 250 acres of industrial
land along the Providence River — over the next few months.
