CVS Classic netted $350,000 for charities

On Sunday afternoon, Sept. 26, as much of the sporting world tuned into the United States Ryder Cup Team’s miraculous comeback to defeat the Europeans and recapture the Ryder Cup at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., Brad Faxon was thinking about Rhode Island. While caught up in the excitement of the competition, the Barrington native kept busy securing signatures from his friends — the world’s best professional golfers. Faxon quickly tucked them into a bag under his arm – ammunition for next summer’s CVS Charity Classic.

Declaring the inaugural CVS Charity Classic a monumental success, organizers gathered at the Rhode Island Convention Center last Tuesday morning to unveil plans for next year’s event at Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington and to distribute $350,000 to 19 local charities.

The 2000 CVS Charity Classic will be held July 9, 10 and 11. Golfing legend Jack Nicklaus has already confirmed that he will return to Rhode Island, along with several of the game’s top players, including David Duval.

Tuesday’s event gave CVS executives a chance to thank those who helped put the 1999 event together – and for charities to collect their money and thank CVS in return. Jack Kramer, of CVS, served as chairman of the tournament.

”I think we saw the beginning of a Rhode Island tradition in Barrington last month,” he said.

Kramer praised the efforts of Faxon and Billy Andrade for drawing so many top professional golfers to the Ocean State. Besides Nicklaus, the nationally televised tournament featured five of the world’s top 25 players and 10 former U.S. Ryder Cup Team members. It also featured a golfing rarity – consecutive holes-in-one by Lee Janzen and Scott McCarron.

Gov. Lincoln Almond, also saluted Faxon and Andrade.

”Brad and Billy have never forgotten their roots here in Rhode Island,” he said.

And Tom Ryan, CVS’ chairman and chief executive officer, echoed those sentiments.

”There are givers and takers – those two guys are givers,” said Ryan.
