Funds approved for transportation projects
House and Senate appropriators reached an agreement on the fiscal year 2001 Transportation Appropriations bill, which includes millions of dollars for Rhode Island transportation projects. Projects range from promoting alternative forms of transportation – such as bus and ferry travel – to rebuilding Providence’s Route 195, which, by moving the highway south of the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier, will reconnect the Jewelry District to Downtown Providence and open 35 acres for redevelopment.

FEMA grant dedicated to hazard mitigation
A portion of a $300,000 grant awarded to the City of Providence by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Project Impact is being dedicated to hazard mitigation along the portion of the waterfront targeted for development as Narragansett Landing, one of the proposed three New Cities. The Providence Redevelopment Agency, that obtained the FEMA grant, has allocated $50,000 to the Providence Redevelopment Agency to support hazard mitigation planning by Sasaki Associates of Watertown, Massachusetts, the firm selected to develop the master plan for Narragansett Landing.
