ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Demand for temporary and contract employees nationwide remains steady despite signs that the nation’s economy is slumping, according to the American Staffing Association’s Staffing Index, which measures current staffing employment trends.
The group’s index has fluctuated between 98 and 99 points during the most recent five-week period, covering Jan. 14 to Feb. 17. The index stood at 99 for the week of Feb. 11 to 17, an increase of 0.9 percent from the week before. By contrast, the index stood at 93 for the week of Feb. 12 to 18, 2007

The ASA Staffing Index gives a snapshot of the U.S. economy as it measures employment trends. According to the ASA, it is “a coincident indicator of overall U.S. employment.” The baseline for the index was set at 100 in June 2006.
