EB gets $15.6M Navy contract

GROTON, Conn. – The Electric Boat division of General Dynamics has been awarded a $15.6 million U.S. Navy contract to develop advanced submarine technologies for current and future undersea platforms.

The contract calls for Electric Boat to perform Concept Formulation (CONFORM) studies in areas including manufacturability, maintainability, survivability, hydrodynamics, acoustics and materials, the company said in its Wednesday PRNewswire release. Electric Boat also will conduct research and development work in other areas, including manning, hull integrity, performance, ship control, logistics, weapons handling and safety.

Yesterday, Force Protection Inc. of Ladon, S.C., announced it has reached an agreement with the Land Systems division of General Dynamics to become partners in the production of Force Protection’s Cougar medium mine-protected vehicle. The agreement, which took effect Nov. 11, is the first vendor arrangement between the companies.

The Cougar has been in use abroad by U.S. forces since 2004. First used in Falujah, by the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, it is now used by all branches of U.S. armed forces. To date, the company said, not a single fatality has occurred in a Force Protection vehicle.

Force Protection (OTCBB: FRPT) will be prime contractor under the agreement, with General Dynamics as subcontractor, using available production capacity at the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center in Lima, Ohio to perform structure fabrication of the vehicle.
