U.S. Sen Jack Reed today announced the passage of his bill to name the new post office in East Greenwich the “Richard L. Cevoli Post Office.”
“I am pleased Congress passed this bill to name the post office on Post Road in East Greenwich after Commander Cevoli,” Reed said in a statement yesterday. “The valor he demonstrated as a Naval officer in World War II and the Korean War will now be recognized, not only in his hometown … but by all Rhode Islanders.

Cevoli was awarded the Navy Cross during World War II, for bravery during the 1944 Battle of Leyte Gulf off the Philippines, when he strafed several Japanese ships. His other awards, during a distinguised career as a Navy pilot, included two Distinguished Flying Crosses and eight Air Medals.
Cevoli was born in East Greenwich in 1919, and lived in the town all his life. A graduate of La Salle Academy in Providence and the former Rhode Island State College, now the University of Rhode Island, he also had studied at the Naval War College in Newport.
