The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently completed a $150,000 project at Taunton’s Cabin Realty site which included limited demolition and the removal of asbestos debris that could otherwise have become airborne, the agency announced Friday.
The controlled demolition of the boiler room and adjacent smokestack enabled the EPA to remove asbestos from the boiler room and surrounding area as well as asbestos pipe wrap from throughout the rest of the buildings, the agency said.

The dilapidated buildings, located on a seven-acre site at 100 Arlington St., were used for various manufacturing operations between the early 1900s and the late 1990s when the buildings were condemned. With the buildings in a state of disrepair, asbestos materials within became exposed to the environment and risked becoming airborne.
Throughout the cleanup, EPA worked with officials from the city of Taunton and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection to coordinate the work. The city is currently seeking funding to complete the demolition of the remaining structures and dispose of the debris.
