As a self-described “grassroots ‘roll-up-your-sleeves’ leader,” Todd Blount keeps an active life in and out of the office. On weekends, he downhill skis, hunts ducks, fly fishes or backpacks. During the week, he leads Blount Seafood Corp., a multinational company based in Warren.
Blount has been in the family business for 13 years, since earning his MBA from Boston University in 1994. Previously, fresh out of college – the University of Vermont – he had worked for three years at Verizon in Marlboro, Mass., and at a summer camp.
At Blount, he rose through the executive ranks, starting as vice president of product management in 1994, then becoming executive vice president in charge of administration, human resources and product development in 1997, and president in 2000.
Under his leadership, he noted in his 40 Under 40 application, the company has grown steadily, by about 10 percent per year, and it now has 150 employees and $60 million in annual sales.
Blount has sought to not only maintain the company’s leadership in the seafood industry, but also increase its penetration into the food-service marketplace, growing sales for the soup line, for example, from $200,000 in 1994 to $38 million in 2007.
Blount represents the third generation of his family to lead the company, and he attributes his success to the support from his father, Frederick “Ted” Blount, now chairman of Blount Seafood.
“My dad always pushed me professionally,” he said, “lets me fail, encourages me in difficult times, and most importantly, stands beside me as part of our partnership as owners together.”
Blount also has a strong faith. As he put it, “My skills and abilities are given to me by God, and enabled by my family” – his wife, Mindy, and their children, Nelson, Calvin and Eliza.
To give back to the community, Blount co-founded and runs Rhode Trip, a nonprofit that takes teenage boys in grades 7 through 12 on week-long hiking trips to northern New England to teach Christian leadership and teamwork.
Plus he’s opened a clam shack across the street from the Blount Market and serves authentic, all-natural foods there. “I have a vision of connecting people to the waterfront in Warren,” he said.
