FERC chair comments on gas pricing inquiry

Pat Wood, chairman of the Federal
Energy Regulatory Commission, offered comments today on the federal and state regulator investigations into accusations New England power
plants shut down in order to sell the natural gas that would have
fueled the plants during record cold Jan. 14 to 16.

Generators are allowed to sell their gas in the spot market
under New England grid rules. The grid operator, ISO-New England,
is reviewing its current policies. Gas in Boston jumped to a
record $51 per million British thermal units during the cold
weather.

“I’ve seen nothing that makes me think at all” that there
was market manipulation, Wood said, adding that the federal group would continue to provide support into the allegations being made on both sides.
