Governor Lincoln Almond accepted the resignation of Department of Human Services (DHS) director Christine Ferguson. She announced her decision to step down effective Nov. 16.
“Christy Ferguson leaves an enduring legacy as she concludes her tenure at the Department of Human Services,” said Governor Almond. “Through her efforts, Rhode Island has become a national leader in providing health care.”

Succeeding Ferguson will be DHS deputy director Jane Hayward. The appointment is subjecty to the advice and consent of the Senate.
Hayward has been with the department since 1973. In her current position, she is responsible for direct oversight of all core departmental functions and developing the department’s budget.
