Seth Mirick is the newly appointed CEO of Providence-based MojoTech LLC, a software company that builds custom websites and mobile apps for high-growth and Fortune 500 companies, with an office in Boulder, Colo.
Mirick most recently served as technology director for Seattle-based Slalom, a technology and business consulting firm serving an international market. He spent 11 years with Slalom, working out of the company's Boston office.
PBN: Why did you decide to pursue this opportunity to lead MojoTech?
MIRICK: For the last 16 years, MojoTech has delivered exceptional digital engineering and product development services to our clients. The challenge and opportunity of the next chapter in MojoTech’s evolution lies in scaling that success, expanding our offerings and deepening our impact across the midsized and enterprise markets. Having spent my career helping digital consulting companies grow, I saw this as an exciting opportunity to lead the company into its next phase.
PBN: What are your initial goals for MojoTech, and what is your overall vision for the company in the longer term?
MIRICK: In the short term, our focus is on scaling the excellent work we’re already doing. We plan to strengthen relationships with our current clients and expand our presence in the mid-market and enterprise sectors. We’ll focus on building a strong sales engine, growing our teams in Providence and Boulder, further refining and expanding our capabilities, and increasing our impact across the Northeast and Central regions.
In the longer term, my vision is for MojoTech to be recognized as a leading partner for innovation and digital transformation nationwide. We’ll be known for our engineering excellence and ability to deliver strategic value at scale. We aim to become a trusted leader in solving complex challenges for companies that want to stay ahead in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
PBN: What challenges and opportunities stand out to you in Rhode Island's technology sector, particularly when compared to the Greater Boston area's well-established tech hub?
MIRICK: While not in an established hub like Boston, being headquartered in Providence allows us to tap into the broader talent pool of southern New England, including [Hartford, Conn.], [Worcester, Mass.], Providence and Boston. Rhode Island’s lower cost of living compared to Boston or New York allows us to attract and retain top talent while offering employees the chance to build their careers, establish families and make meaningful contributions to the communities where they live.
Rhode Island’s emphasis on STEM [science, technology, engineering and math] and computer science education continues to expand the local talent pool, allowing us to recruit innovative people and work with emerging companies. In addition, Providence’s competitive real estate market enables us to maintain a great office space to host clients, create team spaces and encourage in-person collaboration.
While hybrid work models let us effectively serve clients nationwide, Rhode Island's proximity to major cities like Boston and New York [City] allows in-person meetings in two major U.S. financial services hubs when necessary. This allows our team to work with clients throughout the Northeast and provide on-site presence as needed.
Our office in Boulder, Colo., has many of the same advantages and serves as the hub for our clients in the central U.S., drawing talent from the Greater Denver area and having similar “close-to-the-problem” capabilities with clients in Denver. I see potential in replicating this model in other midsized cities as we continue our growth trajectory.
PBN: Based on those differences, do you expect to adjust your strategies in Rhode Island? In what ways, if so?
MIRICK: Our strategy is to harness Rhode Island's unique strengths in education and local business to create a positive community impact, using it as a catalyst for scalable national success. We will forge deeper relationships with local educational institutions and nurture the next generation of tech talent. By investing in the regional workforce, we aim to retain top talent and strengthen the state’s tech ecosystem. On the business front, we’ll engage closely with Rhode Island’s tight-knit community, working alongside local businesses to drive innovation.
PBN: After a turbulent year for the broader industry in 2023, what is your impression of the local technology sector's health at this time? How do you expect that to evolve in the next year?
MIRICK: The economy and broader industry are stabilizing into a “new normal” after the volatility of recent years. With a resilient consumer economy and recent Fed [Federal Reserve] rate cuts, I’m optimistic that our clients will have the confidence in the future to invest in the digital transformation and product development necessary to meet their customers' evolving needs.
I believe the shifts we've seen over the last two years have permanently reshaped expectations for the B2C [business-to-consumer] and B2B [business-to-business] spaces. Consumers now demand seamless, digital-first – and often digital-only – experiences personalized to their needs, whether opening an investment account, consulting with a doctor, buying a home or finding the perfect sneaker.
People leading business-to-business transactions are starting to expect the same level of interactions. To keep up, businesses must deliver frictionless, omnichannel interactions, rapid innovation and real-time decision-making tools. Emerging technologies like AI [artificial intelligence], machine learning and cloud computing offer the potential to accelerate this transformation, automating processes and scaling personalized experiences. Success requires a focused strategy, exceptional engineering and a readiness to embrace change.
MojoTech's commitment to efficient, cutting-edge and high-quality digital engineering positions us to effectively help clients overcome challenges in the coming year and well into the future. I’m excited about what’s ahead and how we can help reshape the way the world works.
