At one point last week donations to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank were off by about 50 percent. That means at food pantries throughout Rhode Island, demand is outpacing supply. And as the economy continues to worsen, demand is increasing.
One obvious conclusion is that an outpouring of generosity toward charities set up in response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks has taken its toll on donations closer to home. It is clear that America did in fact unite as a result of Sept. 11. The terrorists who no doubt expected to make us weaker – did just the opposite.
