Gaming Commission: put it to a vote

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Special House Commission to Study Gaming has recommended a statewide referendum for voters to decide whether or not to allow a casino to be built in the state.

The Nov. 4 referendum, which would require General Assembly approval, would come before any specific casino development is chosen. If voters said yes to the casino question, an independent regulatory body, appointed by the governor, would be established to begin a “competitive casino-development process,” a General Assembly press release says.

The successful bidder in that process would be allowed a specific time period to enter into a development agreement with a host community. Voters in that municipality then would have to approve any casino proposal before it moves forward.

Landmark to relocate its ambulatory care center

WOONSOCKET – Landmark Health Systems recently announced plans to move the Landmark Ambulatory Care Center from its present location at Landmark Medical Center to the Emergency Department at Landmark’s Woonsocket unit.

The move was made because of the success of a new system implemented at Landmark Medical Center last year, which separates patients in the emergency room based on injury or illness severity. The system has dramatically reduced waiting times, the hospital said, prompting Landmark to consolidate all emergency services into one location.
