The federal Veterans Affairs health system is has been inundated in recent years, leading the government last week to initiate a moratorium on new enrollees, excluding veterans with service-related injury or who live in poverty, the Boston Globe reported today.
The newspaper reports that growth in the number of patients at the country’s largest health system has swelled 70 percent nationwide, while the VA’s budget has grown only 24 percent. The growth has been fostered by a decision four years ago to open enrollment to all veterans.

Since 1998, nearly 125,000 veterans in New England have signed up to receive medical care at the VA. Because of the surging demand, veterans in many cases wait several months even for basic primary care, the Globe said.
