Governor Don Carcieri announced that approximately 400,000 pounds of shellfish will be transplanted to cleaner waters of Narragansett Bay next month. The Dept. of Environmental Management had not been able to move forward with the transplant program this year due to budget constraints. However, the governor tapped his contingency fund for $50,000 to enable the project to proceed.
The shellfish transplant program will be held in mid-May, with the Dept. of Environmental Management supervising fishermen who will dig up adult quahogs from overcrowded beds in Warwick Cove and Greenwich Cove. The fishermen will be paind ten cents a pound for 50-pound bags.

The shellfish will be given two years to grow and spawn in the High Banks Shellfish Management Area of the upper reaches of Narragansett Bay, expanding the depleted stocks of quahogs in the area before they are harvested in December 2004.
