Hasbro Inc., the maker of the
Monopoly board game, said it plans to file a lawsuit against the
maker of a game titled Ghettopoly unless sales to retailers are
halted.
Ghettopoly is a “reprehensible” game” that violates the
intellectual property rights of Monopoly, Pawtucket-based
Hasbro said in a statement. Hasbro, which has no connection
to Ghettopoly, has sent two letters to Ghettopoly maker David
Chang asking him to stop selling the game, Hasbro spokesman Wayne
Charness said.

Monopoly, created in 1935, is the world’s best-selling board
game. Several civil-rights groups have asked for retailers
including Urban Outfitters Inc. to stop selling Ghettopoly or
face a boycott. The object of the game is to “buy stolen
property and acquire the most money,” according to the company’s
Web site. Some have said the game has racist intent.
Chang didn’t immediately respond to an e-mail message
seeking comment.
