Deal to offer broadband statewide
BOSTON — Every school, town hall and police department in the state will have a shot at inexpensive broadband Internet access thanks to a deal between a state agency and a telecommunications startup backed by Cisco Systems Inc. Widespread interest in the program could speed development of a statewide network of “always on” Internet connections that rapidly transmit audio, video and complex graphics. “This is going to be an enormous boon for the areas of the state that have been underserved by telecommunications providers,” said Ray Campbell III, executive director of the Massachusetts Corporation for Educational Telecommunications, the state agency that signed the deal last week. MCET inked the three-year contract with Waltham-based Digital Broadband Communications Inc., a relatively new telecommunications company backed by Cisco Systems, a giant networking company with headquarters in California.
The deal requires Digital Broadband to provide 1.5 million-bit-per second Internet connections to any of the commonwealth’s 1,850 school buildings or 4,000 municipal buildings where the community expresses interest.
Broadband access costs as much as $2,000 monthly in parts of western Massachusetts and Cape Cod. Digital Broadband’s offering will cost less than $500 per month, said Campbell.
