Holiday travel tips from T.F. Green

The R.I. Airport Corporation and T.F. Green Airport remind travelers that the Thanksgiving period, this Wednesday through next Tuesday, is one of their busiest.

To accommodate the crush, extra staffing will be added throughout the airport, including airport police, airline and rental car personnel, food and retail staff, and parking lot attendants. Shuttle service will also be increased.

Those using airport parking are asked to allow extra time, as lots fill up quickly. (Parking rates for the long-term lot, Lot E, are $11 per day and $56 per week.) Longer wait times should be expected at the hourly lots, and their exit booths, as those fill up with “meeters and greeters.”

To minimize wait times at the security check points, the Airport Corporation, its airline tenants and the U.S. Transportation Security Administration issue the following tips:

* The New 3-1-1 Rule: Any liquids carried aboard a plane – including gels and aerosols – must be in 3 ounce containers or smaller; they must be enclosed in a one-quart, clear plastic bag that has a zip top; the limit is one bag per passenger.

* Pack Smart: Please be aware about what can and cannot be placed in carry-on luggage (see the 3-1-1 rule, above). Film should be packed in carry-on bags, since it can be damaged by the screening equipment for checked baggage. Presents should be unwrapped, in case bags require additional screening. Passengers are asked to pack more into their checked bags, and carry less luggage through the checkpoint, to minimize delays.

* Arrive Early: Lines will be longer at the ticket counters and the security checkpoints, especially during peak travel times for departing flights, 6 to 9 a.m. and 2 to 6 p.m.
Passengers are encouraged to check with their carrier, as suggested arrival times vary. In case of inclement weather, passengers are advised check with their carrier for delays or cancellations.

* Speed through Security: To help minimize wait time, please remove all outer clothing, shoes and metal objects, and place them in the plastic checkpoint bin or your carryon bag before you reach the checkpoint. And please have documents ready.

* Required Documents: A government-issued issued photo ID must be presented with the ticket or itinerary, if checking in at the ticket counter. Passengers also are required to present a government photo ID, and the boarding pass with the date of departure and the passenger’s name, at the security checkpoint.

* Meeters and Greeters: People greeting arriving passengers are asked to connect with their party in the lower-level baggage claim area. Please check the updated flight information on the airport’s Web site, www.pvdairport.com, before driving to the airport.
