The U.S. Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division has awarded iRobot Corp. of Burlington, Mass., a $3 million order for iRobot PackBot EOD robots, to be used by U.S. forces.

The initial order was for 22 bomb disposal robots, spare parts and repair services. The robots are to be used to train U.S. forces in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere in how to identify and get rid of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
The contract was granted by the procurement office of the Naval Air Systems Command on behalf of the Robotic Systems Joint Project Office at Redstone Arsenal, Ala. Its terms allow the military order up to $64.3 million in robots, spare parts, training and repair services.

Joe Dyer, president of iRobot Government & Industrial Robots. “The Robotic Systems Joint Project Office is committed to rapidly deploying life-saving technology to the battlefield and we are glad to be able to support its mission.”
iRobot has already delivered more than 500 PackBot robots to a broad range of military and civilian customers worldwide. The company’s robots have performed tens of thousands of missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, where they are credited with saving soldiers’ lives.
