January a time to get organized

Lyn Conway, president of A Fresh Perspective, a Warren company specializing in training salespeople, has five corporate clients and more than 1,000 independent entrepreneurs with whom she works.

Each year, clutter and disorganization cost a company time, money and resources that, instead of being spent on improving the company, are dedicated to finding or reproducing lost materials. January was dubbed “Get Organized Month” by the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) and is a time dedicated to raising public awareness about getting organized.

NAPO reported that getting organized can increases a company’s bottom line by 10 to 15 percent. Conway said she has yet to calculate her cost savings since working with Organized By Design.

Denise Mair, owner of Organized By Design and a member of the NAPO New England Chapter, said getting organized is a common New Year’s resolution, and like most it is not is easy to keep.

Organization is a skill that can be learned. First Mair will visit with a person to find out the issues. It may be e-mail overload, a lack of information management or the relocation of an office that can leave people scrambling to find what they are looking for.

People should resist the temptation to print all e-mails they receive. Instead, they should invest in the proper storage equipment and dedicate a new folder or binder for each separate project, said Mair. Clear containers, file cabinets on wheels or a large bookcase can keep things organized and easily accessible.

Time management is also a key. Workers should plan meetings at the time of the day when they are most alert to maximize their ability and dedicate at least an hour a day of uninterrupted time to getting organized, said Mair.
