A yearlong initiative of job shadowing programs throughout Rhode Island kicked off at the Hyatt Regency Newport with support from the Rhode Island Hospitality & Tourism Association, Junior Achievement and Tech Collective. More than 30 high school students from the William M. Davies Jr. Career & Technical High School in Lincoln participated in the Junior Achievement Job Shadow Day program.
For the past four years, Junior Achievement of Rhode Island has partnered with the Rhode Island Hospitality Education Foundation to highlight career opportunities in the hospitality industry. The Job Shadow program provides Rhode Island students with the opportunity to “shadow” a mentor to learn how school skills are applied in the workplace. The participating students from Davies High School are also enrolled in the ProStart program, a two-year industry-based curriculum designed by the National Restaurant Association.
Students were given the opportunity to shadow professionals from a variety of areas in the Hyatt Regency Newport, rotating between the front desk, sales, reservations and housekeeping.
The National Groundhog Job Shadow Day program is coordinated by the Job Shadow Coalition, which includes America’s Promise, Junior Achievement, the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Labor. •
