R.I. gets funding to protect public beaches

WASHINGTON – The state of Rhode Island will receive $212,000 in federal funds to help keep its public beaches clean, U.S. Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.) recently announced.

The funds from the Environmental Protection Agency will be used to test, monitor and notify the public about the quality of water at the state’s public beaches. Federal law requires states with coastal recreational waters to meet water quality criteria set by the EPA.

Last summer the Rhode Island Department of Health closed a number of beaches due to high levels of bacteria and currently discourages swimming north of Conimicut Point in Warwick.
