PROVIDENCE – Several Rhode Island technology firms are expected to receive funding for defense projects as part of the recently announced Department of Defense budget. Sen. Jack Reed and Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy, members of the Armed Services Committee and Appropriations Committee, respectively, announced a total of $79.9 million in the bill for Rhode Island defense projects.
Tiverton-based PSA, a software developer, will receive $2 million for further design and development of its INTERLOCKS software. INTERLOCKS serve as performance support systems for onboard submarine training and maintenance, and is used in operator training and diagnostics for the submarine Tomahawk launch system.
Rite Solutions of Portsmouth will receive $3.6 million for continued development of a prototype of an improved shipboard Combat Information Center. The company’s prototype is aimed at improving the user interface of the CIC, which receives, analyzes and displays critical, time-sensitive information.

Portsmouth-based Systems Engineering Associates Corp. will receive $3 million to complete development of its Surface Vessel Torpedo Tubes, which uses automobile airbags – as opposed to high-pressure air flasks – to launch torpedoes from surface vessels.
The bill authorizes $4.8 million to the Army National Guard and $2.8 million for both the Air National Guard and the army reserves to purchase the high-tech Modular Sleep System and Extended Cold Weather Clothing System made by Charlestown-based Kenyon Industries/Duro Industries.

MIDDLETOWN – BEAMHIT LLC, a Maryland-based technology firm which has its Laser Marksmanship Training System (LMTS) in Middletown, will receive $9.6 million to bolster that program, according to Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy (D-RI) and Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI).
LMTS assists military and law-enforcement agencies to maximize their marksmanship skills using BEAMHIT’s cutting edge technology. The National Distance Learning Marksmanship Training System Center in Middletown is a communications system that allows military instructors to provide online training from a single location to assist soldiers with their combat-readiness qualifications. The firm’s technology is in use by the U.S. Army National Guard, the U.S. Army Reserve, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Marshals.
Kennedy and Reed also recently announced that Anteon Corp., also of Middletown, would receive $3 million in federal funding to accelerate its Integrated Submarine Warfare System modernization program. Anteon will work with the Naval Undersea Warfare Center to integrate state-of-the-art commercial components and improve training in the war-fighting capabilities of the entire U.S. submarine fleet, the Congressmen announced.
