Kevin Low

Kevin M. Low’s first job in computer networking came at age 10. He and his brothers crawled through a drop-down ceiling carrying coaxial cable to set up computer networks for their father’s clients. The introduction to computer networks left a lasting impression, as did the entrepreneurial spirit of his father, who founded two technology companies.
Today, Low serves as the president of Secured Network Services Inc. (SNS), an IT support company he started out of his living room in 2003. Though no longer crawling through ceilings together, Low still works with his family. His brother Paul, the company’s first hire, handles all of SNS’ nontechnical operations. The company provides IT support to more than 100 businesses and has plans to open a 25,000 square feet data center in Pawtucket this fall.
Before founding SNS, Low worked as a computer engineer at GE Capital and managed the computer network for the Department of Housing and Residential Life at the University of Rhode Island, while studying for his degree in Management Information Systems. After graduating from URI, Low worked as a network engineer with the Computer Sciences Corporation. Stationed at the Electric Boat facility at Quonset Point, the company tasked Low with streamlining the facility’s massive and outdated network operations.
Low handled that job and went on to work as a network and security consultant with Aegis Associated Inc. in Boston. The dot-com boom kept him busy setting up computer and e-commerce networks, but it wasn’t long before he began feeling the urge to follow in his father’s footsteps and found his own company. SNS now employs 12 employees and its IT service business grew by 74 percent last year.
When not setting up computer networks or fixing existing ones, Low can be found working on a different kind of entrepreneurial project – the renovation of his 100-plus-year-old Victorian home in Pawtucket. •
