Kopin reports net loss for quarter

TAUNTON, MASS. — Kopin Corp., a developer and manufacturer of heterojunction bipolar transistor products and miniature flat panel displays, posted a loss of $6.8 million, or 10 cents per share, during the first quarter of 2001. During the year-ago period, the company posted net income of $2.3 million, or 3 cents per share.

Revenues for the quarter dropped from $19.7 million last year to $15 million for the same period this year. In a statement accompanying Kopin’s financial release, company president and CEO Dr. John C.C. Fan pointed to a high level of wireless handset and broadband inventories in the supply chain. He said the company’s order rates had begun to pick up recently, and said he expected the company to reach profitability in its growing CyberDisplay business by year-end.
