Lucent, C-Tech certify J&W for training

Johnson & Wales University’s School of Technology has been granted status as a Certified Training Facility by Lucent Technologies and C-Tech Associates to offer job training and certification in network cabling. According to Stephen Andrade, chairman of the School of Technology, job growth in commercial cable installation is growing by more than 15 percent per year, and there is an immediate and future need for trained technicians.

The certification program is composed of two courses, “Introduction to Networking” and “Introduction to Fiber Optics.” Students will master pin configuration and pair layouts for proper termination of different cable systems, and determine the source of a cabling problem through pin configuration, layouts and adapter testing.

The 30-hour “Introduction to Networking” course trains students to install and test Category 5 and other copper-based cabling systems in a live environment. In the 16-hour “Introduction to Fiber Optics” class students will receive theoretical and hands-on training in the placement of cables, installation of fiber connectors, and testing with DAVE-2 Testers.

Students completing the program with an 85 percent average or higher in each of the two courses will be certified as Network Cabling Specialists through C-Tech Associates and Lucent Technologies.

Certification prepares students for positions such as network cabling specialist, LAN (local area network) Technician, cable installer, telecommunications technician and fiber optics technician.

Two summer sessions are scheduled: June 3-26 and July 12 to August 6. In the June session, classes will meet Thursday and Friday evening from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Classes in the July session will meet Monday through Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
