Jobs increased by 8,100 in April in Massachusetts and are up nearly 15,000 since January, the state Department of Workforce Development reported Thursday. All private super sectors added jobs over the month with the leisure and hospitality super sector leading the way.
At 3,218,000 jobs are up 23,500 from one year ago with nearly all of the increase occurring since last September. Payroll jobs have expanded by 50,900 since bottoming out in December 2003.

The Massachusetts unemployment rate remained at 4.9 percent in April and has averaged 4.9 percent over the first four months of 2006. One year ago, the Massachusetts rate was 4.8 percent.
The national unemployment rate held at 4.7 percent in April, the third month in a row the Massachusetts rate was above that of the U.S. The Massachusetts rate had been lower than the U.S. each month from January 2004 through January 2006.
The job numbers are the result of a monthly survey that uses U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics methodology. More than 9,000 Massachusetts employers are surveyed to determine the number of jobs by industry. These estimates are the economic indicator used to gauge employment growth patterns in Massachusetts.
