PROVIDENCE – Elementary and middle school students’ test scores in reading and mathematics improved statewide last year, Gov. Donald L. Carcieri announced Jan. 30.
In math, 53 percent of elementary and middle school students were rated as proficient, up 3 percentage points. In reading, 62 percent were proficient, for a gain of 4 percentage points. But writing scores declined by 5 percentage points, to 46 percent.

Both math and reading scores rose significantly in 19 of the state’s 36 districts, including Central Falls, Pawtucket and Providence, the R.I. Department of Education said in a news release. Scores in the core urban districts rose 5 percentage points in both math and reading.
“This is truly a turning point in education results for our state,” Carcieri said.
The tests were developed and administered in partnership with New Hampshire and Vermont through the New England Common Assessment Program. Reading and math tests were given in October to students in grades 3 to 8; students in grades 5 to 8 were also tested in writing.
