McDonald’s says U.S. sales up 15 percent

McDonald’s Corp., the world’s largest
hamburger-restaurant chain, said U.S. sales climbed 15 percent in
October, the biggest gain in more than five years, as new menu
items and a Monopoly-game promotion brought in more customers.

Global sales at restaurants open at least 13 months rose 8.4
percent, the Oak Brook, Illinois-based company said in a
statement. Sales in Europe rose 2.1 percent and declined 0.3
percent in the region including Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Sales at U.S. restaurants open at least 13 months have
increased seven consecutive months, following a decline that
lasted more than a year. Chief Executive James Cantalupo has
introduced items such as premium salads and the McGriddle
breakfast sandwich to attract customers. McDonald’s brought back
its Monopoly game promotion in partnership with Best Buy Co.

The company said it will decide in the fourth quarter what
to do with its smaller brands, including Chipotle Mexican Grill
and Boston Market fast-food chains.
