Minimum wage hike means new workplace posters

The Rhode Island minimum wage increased from $6.75 an hour to $7.10 an hour, effective March 1. A second increase to $7.40 an hour will go into effect Jan. 1, 2007.

The two-step minimum wage increase was approved with widespread support by Rhode Island legislators in February, and Gov. Donald L. Carcieri, who had initially threatened to veto the hike, allowed the bill to become law without his signature.

There are two exceptions to the new minimum wage rates: for full-time students under 19 working for nonprofit organizations (90 percent of minimum wage) and for minors 14 and 15 years old working no more than 24 hours a week (75 percent of minimum wage). Rates in these categories will also increase in two steps.

The state Department of Labor and Training has revised its mandatory minimum wage notice to include this new information.
