PROVIDENCE – WLNE-TV ABC 6 has hired a new executive to oversee the development of its new hyperlocal Web sites and other new-media initiatives at the station.

Melissa Manfre began work this week as WLNE’s director of digital media. Her arrival comes one month after the station introduced six blog-style sites on ABC6.com focused on individual communities: Providence, East Greenwich, Cranston, Warwick, Newport, Bristol and southeastern Massachusetts. The sites run on LocalNet, a product made by Bellevue, Wash.-based Datasphere Technologies Inc.

Manfre has also been tasked with figuring out WLNE’s strategy for its digital subchannel 6.2, according to a news release from its parent company, Global Broadcasting of Southern New England LLC, which was formed in 2007 to buy and manage the station.

The station plans to create a separate site for News Channel 5, its 24-hour station on Cox Communications Inc.’s cable service and continue development of its automotive sales site CarsSNE, he said.

We are pleased to have an executive of her caliber as we continue to move aggressively into this most important space.”

Manfre is a veteran of the sales and marketing industry whose most recent job was as director of production and executive director of sales and marketing at DiBella Entertainment Inc. in New York City.
