New ideas for the capital city

It certainly appears that the race to succeed Providence Mayor Vincent A. Cianci, Jr. will produce a spirited campaign season. That bodes well for a city that hasn’t seen one in nearly a decade.

A competitive race means new ideas. It means people digging deep to find ways to improve on the status quo. Already we are hearing calls for education reform and for improving the safety of our neighborhoods. We have heard a call for an independent audit of the city’s finances and a review of city contracts. Such measures can only strengthen the capital city.

We hope to hear soon from candidates as to how they will inject renewed vigor to the ongoing resurgence of downtown. What are their plans, for example, for sparking hotel development, for putting the construction of public parking garages on the fast track?

These are difficult times for the capital city. But they are exciting times. Mayor Cianci said that of all the accomplishments of his administration over two decades, he was most proud that people who live and work in Providence have a stronger sense of self-esteem than they have ever had. That is a reasonable claim for him to make.

Providence has made great strides. It is a far better city today than it was 20 years ago.

Now, under new leadership, we must demand an open and corrupt-free administration to guide the city to the next level of economic prosperity.

With integrity restored to City Hall, Providence can be far better in the future than it is today.
