Newport tapped as home of U.S. ICOMOS annual meeting

Senator Lincoln Chafee this week announced that the U.S. Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) will hold their ninth annual meeting in Newport in April of 2006.
ICOMOS is coming at the invitation of Senator Chafee and the Newport World Heritage Committee. Over 300 World Heritage advocates from throughout the world are expected to attend. US/ICOMOS Executive Director Gustavo Araoz joined Senator Chafee in making the announcement.
“Congratulations to the US/ICOMOS and Newport World Heritage Committee on bringing this prestigious conference to Newport,” said Senator Chafee. “This is a terrific endorsement of the Committee’s work and gives us great momentum as we go forward. Many of you were here this October at the announcement of the creation of the Newport World Heritage Committee and our two nominations. This is further proof that the rest of the world is waiting to discover Rhode Island.”

ICOMOS was founded in 1965 by a few preservationists who wanted to bring order to the erratic and disconnected efforts to preserve and restore heritage sites following the destruction of World War II. ICOMOS now has more than 7,000 members enrolled through 116 National Committees.
ICOMOS supports the World Heritage Committee by evaluating every cultural nomination.
