Parking lot planned for Smith Hill

PROVIDENCE – The Smith Hill Community Development Corporation has been awarded a $36,000 grant through the Providence City Council for construction of an environmentally “sustainable” parking lot. The five-space lot at Douglas Avenue and Chad Brown Street will replace a derelict triple-decker, the development corporation announced. The lot will be covered with a permeable asphalt base that will permit water and oil runoff to penetrate the pavement for absorption by the soil beneath and surrounding planting beds. This will be the first parking lot in the city that will not spill the usual automobile discharges into the city’s sewer system, the development corporation release stated.
